A BuyLater Meeting

Michael, Jonny, Raphael, and I meet as little as possible thanks to the advice of 37Signals and Paul Graham. We chat daily and Skype weekly, but we probably don't all get together more than once every couple of months, excluding non work-related hangouts. But we recently had a meeting at a local coffee shop to plan the next couple months of development for BuyLater. Making BuyLater accessible to as many people as possible is one of our core goals. This drives us to make using BuyLater as effortless and enjoyable as possible and it also means making it available on a variety of platforms.

For a while now BuyLater has only been available on Chrome, Safari and Firefox. But Internet Explorer has accounted for about a quarter of our visiting traffic (interestingly each of the above four browsers represent about an equal quarter of our traffic, with FireFox in the lead). Support for such a popular browser has only taken so long because of the difficulty of developing extensions for it. They sure don't make it easy.

But our developers are rather crafty and have managed to overcome many hurdles to bring us rather dashing port of BuyLater to the Internet Explorer Browser. We've just lunched it today and there have been some hiccups but we're working hard to smooth everything out.

Currently there are a few undesirable warning alerts that are popping up when people try to install. There is nothing unsafe or dangerous about installing BuyLater, we're currently in the process of being approved as a verified extension provider. In the time being though there are some suspicious alerts.

Fear not though, click through them and you'll be able to start watching the things you buy and receiving price drop alerts in time for your holiday shopping!

New Feature: Price Drop Threshold

One of the things that we've noticed now that BuyLater has been live for about a month now is that for some items on Amazon with a lot of 3rd party merchants is that price drops are being abused. Merchants will constantly change the price of their item by $0.01 to stay on top of the listing.

This was getting very frustrating for us and probably some of you. Turns out that over a quarter of the price drop alerts that we were sending out were this trivial changes. So we've added a threshold to our price drop detection.

From now on we'll be completely discarding any $0.01 drop. In the future we'll also allow you to set specific thresholds for each item you track or just set a default that will apply to all the items you watch. This should help keep your price alerts more useful and less irritating.
